More From the Westside... Douglas Park

Here's a few new photos... shot these in mid November, but haven't had time to work on them until now. I've been wanting to photograph in Douglas Park for awhile. It's an amazing space that just seems to go on and on... it has a mini golf course, pool, baseball & soccer fields, ponds with stone bridges, trails, native prairie grass gardens, etc. Douglas Park is also an example of a Westside site that has fallen into a state of neglect and disrepair. Not to say that this park isn't used, but it doesn't seem to be utilized or valued for its full potential.

Hi Lily,

I wanted to explore Douglas Park when I was doing my Chicago park series, but never got around to it. Many of the parks were designed with great care and sensitivity, making them cool places to explore and spend time in. Of course they are still urban spaces and are not always used as the designers originally intended. What's unique about city parks, then, is that they are a completely modern landscape: a sort of hybrid of urban and nature, yielding completely unique experiences. So I think that in the end it is best to think of the city parks as their own experience instead of thinking of them as replacing something. Just like the Grand Canyon or Yellow Stone Nation Park are unique places, so is Douglas or Humboldt Park (another really awesome park).

It's cool to see your continued exploration of your neighborhood.
